Looking after handmade stoneware

Yes, it goes in the dishwasher. A few things that keep it looking new for decades.

Handmade stoneware mugs and bowls drying on a wooden rack beside a deep ceramic sink

Everything we make is fired to stoneware temperatures, which turns the clay into something close to glass. It won’t absorb water, it doesn’t mind the dishwasher and it’s happy in the microwave.

A few things it doesn’t love

  • Sudden heat. Don’t put a cold platter into a hot oven or pour boiling water into a mug straight from the fridge.
  • Scouring pads on the raw clay of the foot, which is smooth but unglazed.
  • Metal marks. Cutlery can leave grey lines on matt glazes. They wipe off with a little baking soda.

Chips and cracks

A small chip on a foot is nothing to worry about. A crack that goes through the glaze on the inside means the piece should retire to holding pencils or flowers.
